Articles must be accompanied by an abstract in English. Authors may additionally submit an abstract in their native language. If possible, please also include a German and/or French version; otherwise, the editorial team will provide a translation of the English abstract.
Please include 3–5 keywords with your submission.
At the beginning of your article, provide your contact details, and add a short biographical note at the end.

Consistency within each article is required, including correct spelling, punctuation, and the consistent use of dates and terminology. Footnotes

Footnotes should be used sparingly and only for additional remarks or commentary. If used, footnote numbers should be placed after the punctuation mark when referring to the entire sentence, or immediately after the specific word to which they refer.

Typographic enrichment

Italics are reserved for titles of works and books, names of organizations, neologisms, and foreign-language words unless these have entered common usage. The use of bold or underlining is not permitted. Single quotation marks should be used exclusively to indicate distance or irony.

Types of Contributions

The International Journal of Music Mediation publishes three types of contributions:

  • Articles present original, research-based studies that advance the theoretical and/or empirical understanding of music mediation.

  • Reflections on Practice (including portraits, interviews, and conference reports) offer critically informed insights into the practice of music mediation while maintaining scholarly rigor.

  • Book Reviews provide analytical and reflective engagement with publications relevant to the field, highlighting key ideas, assumptions, and implications rather than merely summarizing content.

Research involving human beings

It is the responsibility of authors to ensure that their work meets the ethical standards advocated by IJMM. Authors must be able to provide the editorial board with proof of an ethics certificate or written consent from the persons quoted in the article.

Compliance with applicable laws

Authors are responsible for complying with the strict copyright rules governing academic publications. Authors are responsible for taking the necessary steps to clear their rights, but IJMM offers its support to authors during this process. If an author does not receive a response to his or her request for copyright clearance, he or she should inform the editorial board, which will assess the situation.
In the case of musical excerpts in audio form:

  • If the work is not in the public domain, it is the responsibility of the author to obtain the approval of the production company that owns the artistic property, or to ensure that the broadcast of the excerpt in question does not infringe copyright law (in the case of an excerpt of a work that the author plays himself on an instrument, for example).

  • If the work is in the public domain, or if the author uses a recording made by a production company or a work produced by participants in a mediation activity, he or she must have written authorization from the performers or the production company.

In all cases, it is the author's responsibility to ensure that the use of musical content complies with the legal framework in force. Images in the public domain may be reproduced

  • If the images belong to institutions or third parties (museum pictures, etc.), the author must obtain written authorization.

  • If the images are taken from advertising or television documents, they are also subject to copyright legislation.

Inclusive language

IJMM attaches great importance to non-discriminatory and inclusive language use. Author’s are referred to the guidelines for gender-inclusive language of the United Nations (-> website) and to the inclusive language guidelines of the American psychological association (-> website).
